Bed Bugs Habitat
Most bed bugs are excellent in traveling well hidden, whether it is latching onto a suitcase, boxes, shoes, or other traveling objects. Bed bugs when introduced to a new environment, they will spread onto new surroundings such as the cracks and crevices in walls or wood. They hide behind base boards, within the bedding and box springs of mattresses. And in some cases from inside the electrical switch plates , wall paper and picture frames. The most common areas where you will find these pests are inside home, car, bus, shelters and hotels, but they are pretty much found anywhere.
Bed Bugs Behaviors & Threats
Bed Bugs require anywhere between 5-10 minutes to engorge with blood. Once they are fully fed, they will congregate for several days in a secluded area until they are ready to feed again. During this period, they digest their meal, mate, and lay eggs. Adult bed bugs are able to go several months without a meal and are also able to withstand harsh conditions and temperatures. Additionally, female bed bugs lay 1-5 eggs per day (up to 541 eggs in their lifetime). It takes about 21 days for a nymph or immature bed bug to become an adult.
Bed bug bites are relatively painless and humans usually don’t feel or notice the bites. Surprisingly, bed bugs do not transmit diseases, however, their bites can cause red and itchy welts on the human body due to an allergic reaction to the saliva that is transmitted during the bite. In some cases, some humans have no reactions whatsoever to bites.
Bed Bugs Diet
Bed Bugs usually eat at night when human activity/movement is minimal, but they can still feed during the day; bed bugs are opportunistic feeders that will take the chance to have a blood meal during the day. Bed Bugs feed only only on blood and must have regular blood meals to survive. Humans alongside warm blooded animals such as poultry and other birds are the ideal prey for bed bugs.
