Common Mosquitoes in El Paso, TX & Surrounding Areas
Culex Mosquitoes & Asian Tiger Mosquitoes
Identification: Culex Mosquitoes (House Mosquitoes)
Swarm: March – November
Culex Mosquito Habitat
Culex mosquitoes are harder to spot as they fly due to the fact that they are most active at dawn and dusk. Like most mosquitoes, they are attracted to warm and moist environments such as properties in close proximity to ponds or lakes. Additionally, breeding grounds for mosquitoes includes stagnant water such as bird baths, overturned grills, trashcan covers, and kiddie pools.
Culex Mosquito Behaviors & Threats
Culex mosquitoes are the cause of itchy red spots on your body after their bite which can vary in severity. It may take several days for the female mosquito to digest the blood she fed on from its host and then she will seek out a body of still water in which to lay eggs which can range between 200-300 at a time on the water’s surface. After the eggs have been placed, the development cycle can take up to two weeks. Culex mosquitoes are known to transmit the West Nile virus (no treatment for this virus, just prevention) and several encephalitis diseases.
Culex Mosquito Diet
Culex mosquitoes are attracted to body heat and carbon dioxide that humans exhale. Other factors such as naturally occurring bacteria on humans will also attract these pests. All in all, human blood is the female mosquitoes only diet while male mosquitoes feed on plant nectar.
Culex Mosquito Treatment & Prevention
It is important to empty containers that have standing water such as empty tires, buckets, and flower pots. It is also important to cover pools and kiddy pools especially after a rainstorm or when sprinklers/irrigation systems are turned on. If you are outdoors, it is best recommended to wear long sleeves, long pants, and insect repellent when in areas that mosquitoes will be prevalent. Mosquitoes are active around dusk and dawn, so avoiding the outdoors at those times will prevent attracting and getting bit by mosquitoes. During small gatherings, it is recommended to have a medium sized fan and using natural citronella to help reduce mosquitoes as they are not the strongest flyers and avoid citronella.
